Now is the season when many people head for the snowy slopes for some winter sports fun. As skiing and snowboarding grow in popularity many people are almost oblivious to the dangers that winter sports present.
Accident rates for snowboarders and skiers are about the same. It has been observed that reckless behaviour has been cited as a key cause of many collisions and accidents. And reckless behavior is not limited to any one group. Both skiers and snowboarders can be equally reckless, putting others at risk.
Damage to the knees is by far the most common form of skier and snowboarder injury that occurs as a result of collisions. But every year there are many far more serious injuries that result in paralysis, brain damage and even death.
Here’s a brief look at the most common accidents that take place on the slopes each new season.
Collisions.
There is a skier responsibility code that snowboarders and skiers should be aware of as this indicates that people further down the slope always have right of way. Avoiding collisions with these people is your responsibility. But there are always people on the slopes who are completely unaware of the code of skier responsibility.
While many collisions result in nothing more than bruised egos they can be very serious with people suffering paralysis and even death. The most common injury that results from collisions is damage to the legs.
And remember that collisions are not only between people. Skiers and snowboarders can often run into trees, rocks and even ski slope maintenance tractors. When travelling at speed colliding with a stationary object can result in particularly serious injuries.
Falling.
Falling over is all part of what skiing and snowboarding are about. Taking a fall is another way that skiers can damage their knees.
Avalanches.
Luckily very few recreational skiers ever encounter an avalanche. Remaining within the indicated safe areas should be enough to avoid avalanches.
