The areas prevailing wind during the summer months is the infamous Meltemi blowing from the N-NW.Nowadays computer repair and home improvement are very popular jobs. It is first felt in June and becomes stronger through July, August and September when it can reach force 8. It dies down in October. In the spring and autumn gales are common from the N and the SE. The summer months are hot, average temperatures are 25 deg C and temperatures often reach 35 deg C. Milos is the southwesternmost of the Cyclades. A large bay, Ormos Milou, was scooped out when an ancient volcano erupted and hot sulphur springs still exist today. Adhamas is the island’s port Go bow or stern to the E side of the ferry pier or bow to the smaller pier to the E. It is also possible to anchor off to the SE of the short pier. The bottom is mud rocks and weed and poor holding in places. There is good shelter from the Meltemi but winds from the south can produce dangerous conditions. There is water on the ferry pier and fuel can be delivered. Most provisions can be obtained in the village and there are some tavernas. Climb the hill to the Chora at Milos for breathtaking views across the bay. The store is short of security doors .

There are several other anchorages in the bay that are exposed to the north. There are no facilities at any of them. Apollonia is in the NE of Milos. Go bow or stern to the pier or anchor of the beach. Holding is good on a sandy bottom. There are tavernas and a mini market ashore. Ormos Voudhia lies one mile to the south of Apollonia. There is good shelter from the Meltemi but the surroundings are unattractive with open cast mines and a wharf and ore carrier all in view. Kimilos lies to the NE of Milos. There are two anchorages in Ormos Sikia in the SW of the island. They are exposed to the N – NW and unsuitable when the Meltemi is blowing. Pirgonisi is a long sandy beach on the south coast and yachts can anchor almost anywhere along it in attractive surroundings. Good holding on sand and weed. Psathi lies further along the coast to the east. Go bows to the quay or anchor off.

In the summer the prevailing wind is the infamous Meltemi from the NW WNW. July and August sees the winds at their strongest, force 5 ?6 on the northern coast but more often a more gentle force 3 -4. The spring and autumn sees winds form the south, force 2 4. The southern coast is notorious for strong squalls the blow down from the mountains. There is little in the way of warning and they can be violent close inshore. It gets very hot on the island during the summer months with the average daily temperature reaching 35 deg C in July and August and temperatures as high as 40 deg C are not uncommon. Nisis Gramvousa lies off Crete’s S coast. There is a sheltered bay on the SEO side of the island. Yachts can anchor in the bay or go bows to the quay. There are no facilities but water is available fro a well by the chapel.Palaiokhora is near the SW tip of Crete. Go alongside or bow or stern to in the new harbour on the E side of the rocky headland. Or anchor in either of the two bays to the E and W of the headland depending on the winds direction. There is water and fuel in the village and all provisions can be obtained.

The tavernas here are good. There are anchorages on either side of Ak Mouros. Ormos Loutra to the E where a yacht can anchor of the village and Ormos Foinikias to the W. There are a few tavernas and limited provisions can be obtained in the village. Further to the W is Skafion. Yachts can anchor of the village in calm weather. There are tavernas ashore and all provisions can be found. The once tiny village is now a booming tourist resort. At Ay Galini yachts can go bow or stern to or alongside the quay. There is good holding on the sandy bottom and shelter from the Meltemi. There is water on the quay and fuel in the town. All provisions can be obtained and there are good tavernas. Another recently developed tourist resort. Matala is a horseshoe shaped bay on the W side of Ak Latinos. Yachts should only use it in calm weather. Most provisions can be obtained and there are good tavernas ashore.Their computer services or Tiling Services can give you satisfaction.

Prepping one's sailboat is essential for enjoying the perfect vacation for sailors cruising along familiar and foreign coastlines. Although outfitting a sailboat with the proper sailboat parts is extremely important, it is also important to equip sailors with efficient navigation tools and safety gear.

Venturing out on the sea for an extended period of time offers both adventures and risks. However, with the proper equipment, some of these risks can be avoided. Specifically, charting a course for one’s journey may be difficult if the sailor is new to the region. Specifically, sailors are utilizing modern sailing navigation technology as it becomes increasingly available.

Aside from popular boat GPS units, improvements in navigation software for PCs have become another favorite in the latest navigation technology. Particularly, Maptech offers software such as the “Chart Navigator Pro” that promises to be easy to use and clear. Its special features include: new GPS planning and navigation software, best cartography, complete coverage on all U.S. coastal areas and major rivers, free chart updates and weather forecasts. Knowing the right course and direction for one’s sailboat is imperative in both safely steering the vessel and reaping all the fun benefits from the sailing vacation.

Although it may be frightening to even conjure up the idea of needing to abandon one’s sailboat, a sailor must be prepared for all emergency situations. For these situations, safety and survival gear such as lifejackets and buoys are required for all sailing vessels. Other sailboat safety gear include: fire extinguishers, first aid kits, safety harnesses, and Emergency Position Indicating Radiobeacon (EPIRB). With their EPIRBS, ACR Electronics are guaranteed to ensure one's safety and survival when overboard one's sailboat. This tool works as an internal GPS receiver that transmits a sailor’s GPS position and identifier to SARSAT satellites, immediately notifying search and rescue (SAR) forces. Special features include: 100 m GPS position accuracy, FastACQTM GPS engine, provides a GPS acquisition test, a full functional self test of internal circuitry, and battery voltage test, and automatically activates when out of bracket and in the water or can be manually activated. Both safety hardware for sailing (e.g. lifejackets) and technological devices facilitate in aiding a sailor’s survival.

It is very crucial for sailors and their families to be ready for their sailing excursion by not only practicing caution but also by possessing the appropriate sailing tools. With the proper navigation equipment and safety gear, a sailor and his or her family can fully enjoy long vacations out on the sea.

Back to theory in the next module with a look at basic first aid. More work is done with the International Regulations for Collision Avoidance. Finally you will take a further look at marine customs , manners and today's ever increasing legal requirements.

In module 11, the next practical stage you will prepare a passage plan, and while undertaking a short passage work still further on boat handling skills.

This section concludes with an assessment of theoretical knowledge and practical skills gained.

You have now reached a level that entitles you to the International Certificate of Competence or ICC. It is suggested that the skippers of vessels are required to hold this by some European countries. I have never been asked for mine by the authorities and I know of no one who has. It is also suggested that some companies require it prior to allowing charter of a boat. Again I have not come across this in practise.

The next three modules make up the International Bareboat Skipper Certificate and the first looks at taking over a vessel and the necessary checks on hull and rig, machinery and systems, instruments, safety equipment, spares, tools, fuel, water and provisions. It looks at tides and currents and what causes them. You will learn how to use tide tables and gain an understanding primary and secondary ports. There is some more chartwork that includes position fixing and plotting a course to steer to counteract a current. The section concludes with a look at the responsibilities of the Skipper, their communication with and delegation to the crew.

On the practical side you will develop sailing skills with more general deck work, ropes, knots, splices, the care and use of lines. There is more vessel handling work including anchoring, berthing, mooring, handling in confined areas and handling with currents.

This section concludes with module 16 and includes a look at the weather and sources of weather information, personal observations, weather patterns, land and sea breezes, the different cloud formations, rain and fog. You will learn pilotage. There is an in depth look at passage planning including pilot books, almanacs, considerations for passage planning, coastal passages, passage strategy, port regulations, pilotage plans. Finally you will take a further look at the International Regulations for Collision Avoidance.

This section concludes with an assessment of theoretical knowledge and practical skills gained

The author is the best one of plumbers and he also offers tips for gas fitting and roofing.

Bordered by the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and the Caribbean Sea with an area of 6,890,000 square miles, the South American coastline seems almost limitless. As the continent is composed of over a dozen unique countries all offering exotic climate, terrain, and cultures, South America is an attractive cruising destination. From dry deserts to tropical rain forests to even cold mountainous air originating from the Andes, South American climate is not constant everywhere. Cruising along the Pacific coastline introduces a sailor to attractive port cities in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Chile.

After leaving behind the adventures of the Caribbean and carefully navigating your boat compass southwards, the first popular sailing destination is Colombia. Particularly, it is the coastal city of Cartagena de Indias that is considered to be one of the most attractive cities in South America. This colonial city is rich with history, architecture, and shopping opportunities. Its climate is constant with warm and humid temperatures. The city also offers opportunities to visit parks and enjoy ecological trips, engage in water sports, and explore the exciting night life. With plenty of museums, walking tours, and other attractions available, sailors and their families will always find entertainment in Cartagena de Indias.

Sailing just southwest of Colombia brings one to the Ecuadorian coast which reaches from the Andes to the Pacific. Although smaller in size, Ecuador possesses diversity in climate and in its current renewal process. This diversity is illustrated in the city of Guayaquil which lies on the western bank of the Guayas River. Home to the largest shipping port on the Pacific Coast of the continent, Guayaquil is also home to almost 3 million people. Offering hot and humid temperatures throughout the year, Guayaquil is very much similar to Cartagena in its climate. Though the city as been plagued by fires in the past, Guayaquil is going through gradual renovation that aims to supply various opportunities for tourists to enjoy themselves. However, history is still preserved in the colonial district of “Las Peñas”, in its various museums, and in the botanical gardens.

Sailboats come in all different shapes and sizes to accommodate multiple functions and purposes – from daysailing and cruising to racing. Whether a sailor is seeking the thrill of an exciting regatta or looking for some recreational relaxation out on the water, a sailboat must be properly equipped for all sailing adventures.

Since the art of sailing requires the sailor to harness the wind to control the boat’s speed and direction, certain sailboat parts become critical. Specifically, the rig must be correctly tuned and outfitted, including sails, booms, lines and blocks, as well as running and standing rigging.

Sailing lines, including both rope and steel cable, are used on a sailboat and its sails for both stationary and movable purposes. Lines that serve the latter purpose are referred to as a sailboat’s running rigging, which controls the actions of the sails. These movable lines are mostly composed of halyards, downhauls (also called cunninghams), and sheets which raise the sails, strike the sails, and adjust the sails, respectively. With every adjustment of the sails, another important component of sail shape management is sailing blocks. Working with lines, sailing blocks are pulleys used to control the shape of the sails. A set proper of blocks is essential in efficiently executing a sailor’s goals out on the water. Blocks also provide leverage for sailors to adjust sails against the great pressure the wind can place on sails, particularly during heavier winds. Therefore reliable and sturdy blocks are extremely important in all sailing activities.

Known for their sailboat hardware and accessories, Harken offers a comprehensive selection of all types of blocks including single, double, triple, cheek, and snatch blocks. Harken is known for producing stong, durable, compact, and low friction blocks. These blocks come complete with special features including free-rolling Delrin® ball bearings and sheave and sideplates UV-stabilized with carbon-black additive for maximum protection. Catering to numerous needs, Harken blocks are specialized to be used for cunninghams/outhauls, vangs, lead car return tackles, traveler controls, barberhaulers, flag halyards, leech cords, and more.

With the appropriate sailboat parts for one’s sailboat, a sailor can smoothly set sail for a calm get-away out on the water or chase their competitors in an enthralling race.

For some sailors docking a sailboat may be a frightening chore, however it is an important task that is unavoidable and must be learned. The proper docking technicque safely secures a sailboat to a dock or other station. However, preparing a sailboat for safely casting off is a task equivalent in importance. Executing these chores is highly important and is necessary for all sailors.

After learning the skills for docking and casting off, it is also essential to carry the proper equipment for one's sailboat. One of the main supplies to have for one’s sailboat is an anchor. Sailboat anchors are utilized to fix a sailboat to the bottom of the ocean floor. There are numerous types of anchors to fit any sailboat and therefore selecting the appropriate one for your sailboat may be confusing. Making the appropriate choice for sailboat anchors may seem difficult but Fortress Marine Anchors make it easier by offering a wide variety of anchors for all sailboats. All Fortress anchors are precision-machined from an aluminum alloy comparable to steel but only half the weight, penetrate deeper in the sea bottoms for great holding power, have anodized finish for durability, are easy to store and manage, are rustproof and sharp, and come with lifetime parts replacement warranty. With these anchors, sailors can look forward to being safely stationed out on the sea or back on the dock.

Along with anchors, sailboat anchor mounts are useful for trouble-free storage on the deck. Particularly, Windline anchor mounts fit the specifications of Danforth, Fortress, and Delta type anchors. Similar to Fortress, the Windline collection is tailored to suit sailboats of various sizes. Windline provides reliable features including: heavy-duty construction, ideal measurements for corresponding anchors, and are optimal for mounting anchors on sailboats with limited deck space.

Another essential sailboat part for docking is a sailboat fender. Sailboat fenders are used to protect sailboats from bumping into the dock or into one another. Polyform U.S. produces fenders that allow for maximum strength and utility. All Polyform U.S. fenders are made with even wall thickness, molded in ribs, reinforced ropeholds, and unique Polyform valves for long term durability. The appropriate sailboat fender can make the difference between a securely guarded sailboat and a sailboat that is simultaneously endangering itself and other sailboats fastened at the dock.

In sailing, sailors can never be too prepared for such important tasks such as the docking and the casting off of their sailboats. Although the right techniques are crucial, it is just as necessary to choose and carry proper sailboat equipment for smooth docking and casting off. A sailor's competent methods may be crippled without trustworthy sailboat anchors and fenders.

Whether you are a veteran sailor preparing for another adventure out on the sea, or a novice beginning to tread out onto the water, there are key sailing items that benefit every sailor.

First and foremost, protection from weather conditions is imperative when spending hours under the harsh rays of the sun. To shield oneself from these rays, it is important to protect your eyes with some form of eyewear. Harken offers a wide variety of sailing sunglasses to match your individual needs. These sunglasses come equipped with sturdy hypo-allergenic frames and polarized, hydrophic lenses made with distortion-free and anti-scratch glass. By guarding against the hazardous sun rays and depicting a clear view, sailing sunglasses are imperative in yachting and recreational sailing.

For those sailors interested in sailboat racing or yachting, guarding one’s hands from harm is also a crucial safety matter. Sailing gloves are required to adjust the lines of the sail boat’s running rigging when controlling the sails. Since carrying out this task determines the outcome of a race, gloves are extremely beneficial. Ronstan produces an assortment of sailing gloves made with durable synthetic leather, double stitching and thickness, UPF 50, and secure fitting. These reliable features are guaranteed to offer the best protection and grip when sailors need it most.

Aside from protecting oneself from the weather and safely operating sails, another necessary sailing item is a trustworthy sailing watch. With technology advancing, there are numerous facets of a watch other than just keeping track of time. Specifically, Ronstan caters to a sailor’s needs by introducing watches complete with sailing timer functions. These functions include: countdown repeat option, countdown and up for handicap races, ISAF start sequence with warning signals, instant synchronization option, and a shock resistant frame. With these watches, a sailor is able to not only keep track of time, but also to efficiently practice for any upcoming races.

Now, a sailor is set with all of the must have sailing items. However, where does a sailor pack these sailing accessories, gear, and other personal belongings? Sailors want to keep these belongings safe and of course, dry. Harken produces an assortment of sailing bags and duffels to assure that their belongings are intact at the end of the day. Advantages of these bags and duffels lie in their functional attributes such as high capacity storage, handles and straps, multiple pockets, PVC free, and water-resistant zippers. The construction and materials of these bags promise to be a reliable tool for both sailors and their personal belongings.

With these must have sailing accessories, a sailor of any experience level is ready to set off onto the water for a safe and effectively equipped adventure.
