Both North Pender Island and South Pender Island present superb kayaking possibilities in reasonably well protected waters although there are a number of “dangerous” locations to be avoided in specific situations and based on your skill level. The Gulf Islands have some of the most interesting island terrain in Canada and this blended along with the effortless accessibilty makes water sports particularily popular. Accessibility to the Pender Islands can be either coming from Tsawwassen close to Vancouver on the mainland or Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island when arriving by ferry. Numerous individuals choose to come to the islands by personal boat and both excellent anchorage and also private marinas are accessible. Float plane service is also available.

One of our favorite kayak paddles starts at Hope Bay on North Pender Islands and makes the crossing to Mayne Island to be able to examine the numerous islets which dot the region. This particular journey takes you through gorgeous smaller islands while you work your way out into the Strait of Georgia. Seals, sea lions and otters are often observed as well as herons and eagles. Some other excellent trips from Hope Bay involve a visit to the winery on Saturna Island as well as a relaxed paddle south into Port Browning to visit Mortimer Spit as well as the Pender Canal. Make sure you take note however that Plumper Sound may change extremely quickly from a novices paddle to an intermediate paddle.

Day trips out of Otter Bay take in very picturesque scenery and typically supply glimpses of seals, herons and eagles. An additional bonus throughout the summer months is the chance of viewing killer whales from your own kayak. Now this is exhilarating!

For the adventuresome overnight kayakers there’s excellent camping at Beaumont located on South Pender. This stunning spot is part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve of Canada and features eleven campsites. A hike up Mt. Norman (244 metres/800 ft) provides outstanding views of the surrounding location. Poets Cove Resort and Spa is a couple of minutes away in the event that you require some comfort mixed in together with your trip.

Numerous excellent Gulf Islands books are available regarding the North and South Pender Islands if you wish to visit.

In surfing, no matter if you have become an expert in the sport, there are basic things you have to think of all the time. Below are five things that you must know when you go surf wave:

Always be cordial to the local surfers- Most of us are passionate about this hobby we have and like to spread the knowledge. This goes for anything, but especially for hobbies with tight-knit communities. A lot of surfers are willing to teach you on the ins and outs of the sport, the tides of the local beach, tips in paddling out into the water without being pounded to a sand bar and the courtesies involved in it. If you are new, ask for help.

Get yourself the right board for the area- if the area is only for small surf wave, don’t get yourself a short surf board. Short boards have the tendency to plow through the water which makes it hard for you to catch small waves. Small boards often feature a stomp pad on the back which is used in extremely tight maneuvers such as cutbacks. If you are unsure about the board to get, ask the surf-shop employees at your local shop.

Use the right wax for your conditions – This is important. One of the things to frustrate you is when you are out in the water and you start slipping off the surf board since you are using the wrong type of wax. There are two kinds of wax, typically. Cold-water wax is softer and stickier than warm-water wax. If this water is cold enough for this kind of wax not to melt, use it. Warm weather can pose a problem to the cold water wax because of its low melting point and it will run off the board which makes your fiberglass board slippery making you fall off the board every time you try to stand on it.

Surf the break outside- there are more than enough surfers who try to surf wave the shore break. This is the most common mistake. These aren’t the waves that people surf. If you surf these you will never get any significant ride. You can also risk your surf board for damages when you surf the shore break- the skeg or the stabilizing fin at the bottom of the surf board might get caught in the sand and snap off which send you flying off to the sand. Look for sandbars where the waves break away from the shore. This allows you to surf wave over the sufficiently deep water over the sandbar and not break your board. It also gives you room to maneuver.

If you live in a cold climate don’t surf during winter- It may be quite tempting and the waves are great at this time of the year. Most surfers do go surfing during the winter but that is not a good thing to do. Surfing in the cold water of winter can bring about a condition called “surfer’s ear.” This is a growth in the ear that allows you to lose a significant amount of hearing for that particular ear. This is caused by the cold water that gets inside the ear canal. Surfing waves during winter is definitely not worth the risk.

Are you interested in learning to surf? Surfing seemed to be like a huge wave that swept the world away. Same as the huge swells, each time you put those feet on the surfboard, a new and exciting adventure awaits you. Maybe you have become interested in the sport and made it into a lifestyle but you have no idea about surfing 101. It is important that you know some of its guiding principles.

Take note that you are just like a sand particle and the vast ocean would be like it could swallow you whole. It is never just about you but more importantly, you should be aware of the big world around you. Always be attuned to the twist and turn of your natural environment.

Learn to trust your instinct. In being aware to the great big expanse around you, you are able to react or respond accordingly and with alertness to it. Nothing could be leading to fatality than a “panic” caused by unawareness. Preparedness also comes with the understanding that not everything around you may be controlled.

Learning to surf is always the equivalent to getting wet so be ready always. This is the beginning of fun. Take on those giant waves and tell the ocean that you are ready to go into that great big water world. Of course, before you set off into it, make sure that you are equipped with the right knowledge of the basics of surfing. Be determined and always keep safe. Your surfing instructor must be there when you paddle into the water and should stick with you in the entire few experiences of getting wet.

With surfing, you have to know the basics and learn how to cultivate it. Be open to knowing new and better things. Don’t be embarrassed to ask other people especially those who are experts on this field. Being open to learning new things is same as welcoming the possibility of you being a newbie who turns into the expert surfer.

With these things at hand, you are sure to explore the surfing world with better ease. All surfers have their own individual humble beginning. They don’t make learning to surf an overnight thing. Time and practice is essential in the surfing world. Your feet as they settle on those boards won’t be able to function if you don’t understand a thing about the principles of surfing. Being considered an extreme sport, much care should be provided to ensure the surfer’s safety.

Now that you are familiar with the basics perhaps it’s high time you took that perfect wave and be with the perfect people to help you get into the surfing world. Be willing to note these principles and see to it that learning to surf is your best shot at that greatest adventure.

Surfing has become a popular pastime and sport nowadays, which results to more people who suddenly wanna surf. However, not all people are successful in hitting those waves. There are various reasons why people who wanna surf are not able to do it. But the biggest contributing factor among all others is the failure of surfing schools to give quality education to those who are just starting.

Surfing schools are a very controversial topic.

No matter how much marketing forces would like to make us believe, majority of surfers are not overjoyed with the introduction of modern surf schools. Even though there are some very fine surf schools operating today, surfers often blame surf schools for filling the lineup with people, who can’t surf. This is simply a generalization and pointing a finger at the whole surf school industry is quite a misguided accusation.

But the major issue is that a lot of people want to surf and they wanna surf now. People don’t understand just how difficult surfing really is, and they try to take short cuts. They want the ability of a surfer with ten years experience, and they want it in two weeks. Unfortunately there are surf schools out there that take advantage of this situation. The schools know that if they tell the truth about the complications of surfing in real life, they will have fewer enrollees.

This factual omission is quite an injustice to surfing learner. The newcomer to surfing needs to be able to trust the information given to them by the surf school operator whom they have paid, to teach them to surf. But it’s a sad reality that for many cases they simply can’t do it.

Also because learners naturally assume that must be able to trust the so-called surf instructors who will guide them through the process. These learners no longer ask the more experienced ones for guidance in the water. And conversely most experienced surfers no longer offer it. So that means we have a self perpetuating dysfunctional cycle.

The root of the problem is this – you simply cannot teach anyone to surf in a couple of hours let alone a couple of weeks, it’s just not possible. Anyone who says they can do it is just thinking of profit ahead of principles. The absolute best a surf school can do is to give you a glimpse of what it could feel like to ride waves, while standing on a surfboard.

Yes a personal surf coach, who is an experienced surfer themselves, can be of great benefit to the person who wanna surf over a period of time. But that requires serious money. No matter what a new surfer may do, they must always seek guidance from the seasoned surfer in the water.

Surfing appears easy to do, right? You only need to paddle out there, duck under those waves, and ride down the face of the waves doing a bit of cut backs and bottom turns. If you ever tried to rent a surf board and simply had a go, it would dawn on you how a real surf experience is so different.

Surfing was brought back to the limelight when a Hawaiian swimmer Duke Kahanamoku formed the first surfing club in Waikiki. Professional surfing competition was extremely popular in the 1960s, thus giving birth to the best surf experience there is. The major organizing body for professional surfing today is the Association of Surf Professionals (ASP), which also includes five regional organizations. A few pro surfers can earn about $200,000 or more per year from competing but most top professional surfers earn about $20,000 per year. Top professional surfers would earn more than $750,000 over the course of a lifetime purely from competitions alone. More earnings can come from product endorsements and lessons.

So how do you become a professional surfer and have the best surf experience of your life while earning lots of money? Here are a few instructions.

1. Buy surfing clothes and at least one surfboard to get you started. But you may not get that much success without having the main ingredients in the whole mix: great ocean waves. Hence it would be a great help if you are living near the ocean. You will also need to stay in good physical shape.

2. Offering lessons is one of the most popular means to moonlight for the professional surf teachers, who offer lessons to the newbies. It can be a huge expense but if you aim to compete professionally then it’s definitely a great investment. It involves practicing a lot your skills for you to become a surfer and it involves no short cuts. You can locate experienced surfers who offer lessons by visiting surf shops like 2 Mile Surf Shop in Bolinas, California. The shop’s program director is Nick Kreiger.

3. Competing in surfing events at the semi-professional level is your next step. Get ready for traveling to other destinations to join events. You will gain valuable surf experience even if you only compete in a few events while still practicing on your own.

4. Joining the ASP is relatively simple for qualified surfers. You’ll need to apply and pay membership fees. The ASP World Tour is however intended only for a small group of surfing professionals dominating the sport. Even female surfers are allowed to compete.

5. Travel the world for you to compete in ASP events and join the ASP World Tour.

6. Endorsing surfing products and providing surf lessons is a great supplement for your income once you’ve made it inside.

The true definition of surfing is that desire of being in the water and having the freedom to conquer a strong force that can take you to places you haven’t been before. Surfing presents a whole different world for you. Same as taking a new pill, it can be very addictive. But surfing minus the big waves is much like drinking hot beer. So to ease your surf vacation pains away, we have provided a list of the best places for surfers.

1. Gold Coast, Australia

Undeniably, Australia is home to the world-famous beaches and the best waves which make the perfect ingredients for a surf vacation. It is the sixth most populated city in the country and is located in the southeast corner of Queensland. It is popular for having the subtropical climate, for its surfing beaches, and canal systems. Although it is quite expensive, it is a great surfing destination for both newbies and pros.

2. Mentawai Islands, Indonesia

Located off the western coast of Sumatra, the Mentawai Islands is one of the best surfing destinations in Asia. All of its seventy islands and islets are rich in monstrous waves. Its four major islands that block most swells from reaching the mainland became an ideal spot for wave-hungry surfers looking for the surf vacation and adventure of their lives. For you to have that surf vacation, these islands can only be reached by sea and only through ferries and charter boats.

3. Jeffreys Bay, South Africa

Jeffrey’s Bay is near the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Just about an hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth, it is considered as one of the most popular surfing destinations in the world. During the June, July, and August, the winter months, surfers fromt he world over get together to surf and enjoy rides from beaches like Kitchen Windows, Super Tubes, and Boneyards.

4. Fuerteventura, Spain

Fuerteventura is often called as the Mecca of Surfers. It is part of the Canary Island and is the second largest of them that’s found in the Atlantic Ocean.

Surfing is a highly enjoyable and exciting sport that suits anyone of us.

Photography as an art of taking pictures is always enjoyable for the one taking it and the ones who look at them as well. The photographers would surely love to search for the proper angle and the right lighting for them to get those breath-taking photos while those who are to watch them would like to observe, be mesmerized with its uniqueness and come up with their own interpretations of some hidden meanings.

Photography may be anyone’s hobby and anyone can be taught to do it as well. Usually, beginners would start out with still subjects like flowers and sceneries since it’s easier for them to select an angle but have you ever thought about taking photos of sports events? Since their subjects are always on the move, how about taking pictures in surfing competitions? If you are a sucker for surf pictures then these four easy tips can help you in taking award-winning shots not only in surfing but for photograpjhy in general.

First, 99% of the quality depends on good lighting; when you take shots make sure you take them on the right time of the day, which is early sunlight, most great surf pictures are taken during this time. Sunsets may be a good time for these pictures since you can easily find a silhouette of a surfer that can make it more artistic. When the sun is overcast during cloudy days, you can set your camera to black and white. Color is pretty dull during overcast so it’s better to take away the color. Remember that the sun is a photographer’s best friend.

Second is equipment, good cameras mean good pictures but it doesn’t they have to be expensive. You can still find good quality cameras which are not that costly. When you want to get into the water and take surf pictures in great detail or just to have a piece of the action then you must provide a good housing for your cam to prevent it from being soaked in water.

Third, you can still take good pictures in the shore. Take a quick stroll and look around you for some good spots with a great angle. You can select wide shots and not only focus on zooming in. Take something in the foreground such as a tree, person or anything to set focus on the surfer standing in the background.

Lastly, nothing beats practice; in taking surf pictures timing is everything. You have to be at the right place and the right time to get a great shot of a surfer. In order to achieve this you need to have a lot of practice. The continue to take these shots and consistently check your work and see for yourself if you like them. Think of ways of how you could have made the shot even better. With the boom of digital photography it’s now easier to take pictures, so why don’t you try it out.

Surfing may only appear like its value can be commensurate to that of the fun it can provide. However, ever since the ’50s, it has become a serious sport for many people. As a matter of fact, it can no longer be associated with beach bums as it used to be. Now you hear of professional surfers who earn millions just by riding on beautiful waves. Because of this, you can also see men and women taking a surf lesson with the seriousness of a college senior. You can easily enroll by simply going to any popular surf spot. However, you have to be careful in choosing your surfing school. Consider only those that have lessons for pros.

You have to make sure that the surfing school is recognized by professional surfing organizations. If it is not accredited, you run the risk of being provided a substandard surf lesson. This is will just be a waste of time and money. Worse, you end up only a little better than you were. The pros will only shrug off your surfing as that of a first time surfer on his surf board. One guarantee you can have to is to hire a popular pro as the instructor. Location and season count matter a lot for quality surf schools. Thus, you must not consider at all of enrolling at a surfing school at the beaches that don’t offer a good surf. If you aspire to develop professional skills in surfing in due time then you must not be content only with the unchallenging waves.  Choose a surf school that can bring out the professional in you by allowing you to try the more challenging waves like dumpers. Of course, you should try those smaller rolling waves first but as soon as you have enough skills, then you should try the more challenging ones.

You should give importance to your gear and equipment when taking a surf lesson. If a school, grants you access to substandard surfboards and wetsuits, you will never get the feeling of learning the sport like a pro. This will actually dampen your learning process. You must find out if the surf school allows you use different types of surfboards. A professional is someone who can use any kind of surfboard and still manages a superb performance.Â

The fourth and the last element to search in a surf lesson is the number of instructors. If there’s too few of them in relation to the number of learners, this will more likely affect the quality of training. The ideal training would be of course one on one. If this won’t be possible, then you might as well go for one instructor for every seven students.
