Surfing is not necessarily a summer sport. A real surfer will enjoy surfing throughout the freezing winter months just as much as they’ll enjoy basking in the warm summer sun. So long as the water isn’t too choppy the winter months will often provide better waves. There’s also the added bonus the beaches and water will be a lot quieter.

Surfing in your favourite bikini isn’t safe regardless of the time of year. You may look good but if you come off your board or end up getting dragged along the sea bed, you’ll wish you invested in a good wetsuit. Keeping you warm and safe is the main function of any good wetsuit. Any hardcore surfer knows they spend the majority of their time sat on their board waiting for a good wave. If you’re going to be sat out in the sun you may find you’re more comfortable in a wetsuit with shorter sleeves and legs. For colder waters like those of the UK coasts you’ll need to look at about a 7mm thickness. Try and invest in a good brand name wetsuit if you can afford it. Brands like rip curl and Roxy wetsuits are very reputable and you know you’re paying for quality.

If you are looking to buy a wetsuit there are a few things you need to bear in mind. If you feel like your movement are being restricted the chances are it’s too tight. It’s essential that you can move easily as you’ll need to be able to swim in it. The wetsuit needs to keep you warm so if it’s too lose it will let water in and it won’t work. Always buy from a surf clothing specialist who will be able to advise you. A stockist with a large selection of brand is also less likely to push any one particular make. They’ll also be able to help you chose between billabong wetsuits or rip curl wetsuits.

In 2008 the Bournemouth Borough Council decided the town of Boscombe needed an extra edge to attack tourists. In an attempt to spruce up the sea side town they decided to build Europe’s first artificial surf reef. It was thought that this would attract new visitors to the area who could want to keep coming back.

Boscombe is part of Bournemouth which is a coastal town in south central England and sites just off the English Channel. The English Channel is not renowned for its waves and surfers have often preferred to stick to the south west which faces the Atlantic Ocean. When it comes to dusting off the rusty surfboards surfers will often flock to Cornwall.

The reef is constructed by several large sand bags placed on the sea bed to form a curve. It was hoped the reef would make the existing waves taller and give them a better shape for surfing. These sand bags were never designed to create waves. At just over 220 meters from the beach this innovative structure is just over the size of one football pitch.

However, this pioneering new concept hasn’t quite brought the bikini clad tourists the scheme was hoping for. Many people are claiming they haven’t actually seen a real increase in waves. The overall size and shape of the waves it was providing was also criticised too. When the waves are being enhanced by the reef surfers are saying the waves are too high and not safe to ride. Local residents are now angry at council plans to evaluate the reefs designs after its shortcomings were highlighted. As the reef was originally funded by council money and it went over budget residents are reluctant to see any more of their tax money spent on it.

Despite this the reef still has its fans that are sure it’s working. As the reef is only designed to enhance existing waves many people forget it’s not a wave machine and cannot create them from still water. The winter months will offer slightly rougher water which is when the reef will be better able to help produce smoother higher waves.. Unfortunately this doesn’t help pull in the summer loving flip flop wearing tourists when they’re needed.

With global money worries and people fearing for their jobs, everyone is trying to cut back and save money. Most people are cutting back on the luxuries. Things like nights down the pubs or evening in fancy restaurants are becoming less frequent as are our holiday plans. Swapping Prada for Primark is one thing but swapping the Bahamas or Bournemouth is another. More and more people are sticking to the UK for their holidays at the moment. The UK will always struggle to get anything like the temperatures we’re used to abroad but if it’s sea you’re after there is lots of it.

Being an island we do have a lot of coast and plenty of water. You may not relish of lying on the beach in your bikini if it’s cloudy and overcast but there are plenty of other things you could do with the water.

Surfing is quickly becoming one of the most popular sports in the UK. Because the sport is focused on the water you don’t necessarily need the sun for it. The danger of surfing are often overlooked by many people especially those just starting out. Before you rush out to buy your first surfboard you should consider getting a couple of lessons within someone who knows what they’re talking about. Before you start surfing it’s vital you have a good board. To begin with you may be better off just hiring one as they can get quite expensive then invest in one once you’re sure surfing is for you. To start off with you should stick to a slightly lager board. Brands like Bic surfboards are perfect for beginners. Wakeboarding may be more your things if you want a bit more action and a little less waiting around for a wave. Like the surfboards you’ll need to invest in the proper equipment. Liquid force wakeboards are among the most reputable on the market. If you’re looking for a good quality board always take the advice of a professional.

In the mid 90′s a new concept of surfboard design was introduced and it was to enable surfboards to become lighter, faster, stronger and most importantly, extremely high performing!

Randy French under his shaping label Surftech was producing surfboards like no one else before him. He used a sandwich construction with a number of new experimental materials to bring surfboard design into the 21st century. Two of the main ingredients for this new type of surfboard were the EPS Fused-Cell core and Epoxy Fiberglass that when combined gives the boards their lightweight and ultra strong strength.

Lets take a look and find out what’s so great about this type of surfboard design and what makes it so different to the standard traditional polyester foam and fiberglass surfboards, as well as how they can help your surfing.

Durability – Surftech’s most popular and first creation was the Tuflite, The name speaks for itself, summed up the surfboard is Tough in strength and light in weight. One of the big drawbacks with a standard PU surfboard is the core strength that it has, to give a board ultra high performance its weight is kept to a minimum using 4oz fiberglass cloth. This has a huge effect on the surfboards overall strength and how long it is going to last you. I know personally when I use a PU surfboard on a regular basis I will need to replace it with a new one after about 3 months! This can be a total nightmare and a huge dent to the bank account, especially for the mere mortal un-sponsored everyday surfer. What Surftech surfboards bring to the table is great because not only do you get a surfboard that is going to last you years but also one that is going to perform at a level probably higher than any PU surfboard you have previously owned. This is also great for when you want a new surfboard as Surftech’s hold their value a lot better than traditional boards due to their sheer strength and ability to stay in good condition.

Weight – If you put the question to an old surfer “what would you consider to be one of the most important things when it comes to having a high performance surfboard?” chances are they will tell you weight. If you are riding a heavy surfboard you are going to struggle to do sick moves in surfing like fast snappy turns or busting big airs. One of the standout things you will notice is how difficult you will find it to generate a huge amount of speed with a heavy, sluggish and slow surfboard, generating speed is considered to be a necessary fundamental of surfing waves.

Performance – One of the top things to look out for in a surfboard is this; a board that is going to perform well for you in the waves that you will be hitting on a regular basis. One of the best things about surftech is that they have setup partnerships with some of the greatest surfboard shapers on the planet. The shapers have chosen models that are proven to be very high performing and are their best sellers. Another great advantage with this is with Surftech’s technology they are able to replicate these boards perfectly every time so you know the surfboard you are going to be riding is a proven high performing shape not an experiment gone wrong.

In this world there will always be people who are unsure of something new, but in order for us to progress we must evolve and move one, the same thing goes for surfboards. The beauty of what Surftech are doing is they are taking on and writing the next chapter in the evolution of surfboard design. If you are a surfer who is wanting to become better and really push your surfing to the limit then it really dos pay to have the most advanced top end surfing equipment. Personally I like trying new and different equipment, I find it to be one of the great joys in surfing that you can mix it up so much. Without that ability surfing wouldn’t be as amazing as it is.

Stand-up paddleboarding is one of the popular water activities today. It has been known in Hawaii for a long time, but now it is gaining [recognition and popularity all around the world. The main benefit of stand-up paddleboarding is that it is much easier to perform in comparison to ordinary surfing. Unlike ordinary surfing which needs big waves and good skills, paddleboarding can be done on calm water and requires minimum of being able to stand up and balance yourself on a floating board. But that’s not all, as you become more comfortable with paddleboarding, you can start to use a paddle to allow more movement variations on the water. Therefore paddleboarding is a great water activity for all skill, and can be enjoyed by the entire family.

You need a paddleboard to do paddleboarding. To date, the best paddleboard in the market is without a doubt the Sevylor Samoa Stand Up Paddleboard. This paddleboard boasts lots of excellent features. For example this board is very portable because it is inflatable. When deflated it can be stored and carried in a dry backpack which is included in the purchase. But being an inflatable board does not make it sub-standard comparing to any ordinary surf boards. Sevylor Stand Up Paddle Surfboards utilizes advanced tech drop-stitch material, which enables it to be inflated over 10 psi, therefore achieving maximum rigidity. When fully inflated with 12 to 15 psi, it is as rigid as any ordinary surf board that you will think you are standing on a solid board instead of on an inflatable one. It is strong enough to support a 200-pound paddler. When fully inflated, the board is also longer, wider and thicker than traditional surf boards, so that it is extra stable and has more buoyancy.

Sevylor Samoa Stand Up Paddleboard boasts many good features. To mention only a few, it has a 4” raised tip preventing curling and improving performance. It has large EVA footpad covering a big section of the upperside of the board allowing a sure foot grip. It has three removable fins on the underside of the board producing consistent tracking. It also has D-rings made of stainless steel for securing small cargo up to 10 pounds. It even has a carry handle in the middle of the board so that the board can be conviniently lifted and carried.

All things considered, there is no doubt the Sevylor Samoa Stand-up Paddleboard is the best board to do paddleboarding.

Peaks and Barrels - Where Surfers Go When They Travel

Let me start by telling you I am an unbiased person. I am going to walk you through a little known fact about how our culture and how it is transforming. Right now surfing is the new golf. This last year the board sports industry combined to yield over 7.25 billion dollars. What an incredible number for such a small industry.

So I am telling you this? A couple of things to think about:

Maybe most people don’t actually know what it is like to ride in the tube.

You may never ride a skate board at your local skate park.

If you are a fan of the Outer Banks you know that the season is over. did you know there are still plenty of surfers riding the beautiful OBX peaks and barrels right now.

Why is the board sports industry so profitable you ask?
While we are setting up our drafts for fantasy football, preparing for our Christmas Vacation, this small group of Brave men and women are preparing to find the best peaks and barrels of the season, and they are going to travel anywhere any time to ride them. They do this because it is their job. Dont misunderstand, this is not the life you can just sign up for.
These few people are starring in your American Express commercial; they are contributing input to the design of the tee shirt you are sporting right now, and they are filming the next wave you want to surf for the ride of your life; they get you stoked. Their cultural input (on the clothes you are wearing) is helping them stay motivated while spending 1000’s of hours on planes, traveling the globe hunting for the perfect peaks and barrels.
Are we looking at a culture shift? We now look at the real road warriors as being the ones who stimulate us visually. These heroic few help guide us in our decisions of what it means to be an individual, express who you are, to be dressed up, to look business casual, or how to dress for a night out on the town. Look around how many people are wearing a tee-shirt that looks nice enough to wear under a sport coat? This is what I will be wearing when I apply for my Black Visa…Thanks Shane Dorian!
Road warriors of this culture have the office most of have always dreamed of. They are starting to define our office settings. Only from our cubes do we imagine ourselves to be on Ehukai Beach.
I am happy the surf industry is transforming culture, we are starting to have a new respect for one another, we are starting to work together as a whole not just as individuals. When I sit down at a meeting to discuss the latest in Physical Education I am not judged by my clothes but by what come out of my mouth, my actions, and my morals. Has business once again being transformed into a Golden Age a Surfing Surfing Golden Age? In this new Golden Age can we go into the board room and be judged based on business ethics and market understanding once again? I wish for nothing more.
